The Story Behind the Exhibit

Color Becomes brings together a new body of expressive abstract paintings by Melissa Casanova and handcrafted ceramic vessels by Virginia Casanova in a shared exploration of color, movement, and material.

For as long as I can remember, my mom and I have created together. What began with sharing art supplies around the kitchen table eventually became sharing ideas, techniques, and a lifelong love of making. This exhibition is the first time we’ve brought our individual practices together in one body of work, including pieces we created collaboratively for the first time.

Meet the Artists

Melissa Casanova

Melissa Casanova is a Dominican-American contemporary artist based in Richmond, Virginia. Working primarily in oils and mixed media, she creates vibrant, layered work exploring memory, heritage, place, and the natural world. Her work is held in private and corporate collections, and she was recently named Richmond Magazine’s Best Local Artist for the second consecutive year.

Virginia Casanova

Virginia Casanova is a ceramic artist whose handcrafted vessels celebrate movement, texture, color, and expressive mark-making. Working in clay for more than 15 years, she creates sculptural forms that embrace experimentation and the unexpected.

For Color Becomes, mother and daughter also collaborated directly on a selection of ceramic works, bringing their individual approaches together on the same pieces for the first time.
